Podcast 20 – An Interview with Damien Lovegrove

We’re back once again with another superb, open and insightful interview with another leading photographer. Today our guest is UK based photographer, trainer, teacher and writer; Damien Lovegrove

10329919_10152055054950952_991467436235699074_o

I was keen to find a guest who had ‘been there, done that’ – someone with plenty of experience who could speak with conviction about the photography industry today. Recently, we’ve had discussions in the Ready Steady Pro Facebook community about how the industry seems to have changed in recent years, so I thought what better way to find out for sure than to have someone of Damien’s calibre and experience on the show.

Damien started his life with cameras (in a professional sense) by going to work for the BBC as a trainee camera operator, before working his way up. As you’ll hear in this interview Damien went on to leave the BBC, start an incredibly successful wedding photography business, which ran for 10 years before Damien conciously, and intentionally decided to change direction in order to get weekends and time back in his life. Damien bought a business consultant on board to aid in the change of career from photographer, to writer, to trainer.

Michael Says:

“I first came across Damien many years ago, when i first got into photography myself. In the UK, unlike the US & Australia, we don’t really have many ‘big names’ when it comes to well-known photographers. We have a few, but not many. Well, of the few we do have Damien almost certainly is one of them. I found Damien’s teaching style to be very accessible and easy to take on board, but Damien also shows with his work that he has conviction in what he teaches. Damien is a photographer who has ‘been there and done that’ and as a result was someone I knew would be an excellent guest for the show. I’m really pleased that Damien has agreed to join me to discuss his career share with us some of the things he knows…”

Damien speaks openly about having multiple, passive revenue streams and so much more. This interview is a real-must listen!

As well as all of the wisdom and knowledge shared, Damien was also very generous and shared a discount code offering all RSP listeners 50% off all videos on his website (see the link below).

You really do need to have your notepad to hand, because the gems are dropped thick and fast in this episode!

Podcast 19 – An Interview with Rahim Mastafa of SugarboxStudios

Following on from the successful return of the podcast with episode 18 – This episode finds us picking the brains of Cardiff based Sports Portrait Photographer Rahim Mastafa of SugarBoxStudios.

10923060_10153215662107580_1195636944_o

Today’s interview is something a little different from Ready Steady Pro. The Ready Steady Pro Community and a large body of the listeners are, as you may expect, Wedding and Portrait Photographers. But, Rahim, who describes himself as a Sports Portrait Photographer, photographs – as you’d expect – sportsmen and women, Personal Trainers, Bodybuilders and even Olympic Athletes!

Even if you’re not into Portraiture or if your immediate reaction is that this episode won’t be relevant to you – think again. The fact that we’re talking about a slightly different niche to usual makes this episode no-less relevant to you as Rahim gives us a wonderful insight into his working strategy that includes almost exclusively using social media (Instagram and Facebook in particular) and practically forgoing a website and a blog. This unorthodox approach probably wouldn’t be the advice of many experienced business coaches, but Rahim is going against the grain and this approach is gaining him clients…fast! Despite only having gotten into this niche some 18 months ago and only picking up a camera around 2 years ago Rahim is making his own success and gaining traction and notoriety that many would take a decade to achieve.

Michael says:

“I first came across Rahim when he joined the RSP community on Facebook and saw that he was shooting something slightly different to most – sports, fitness and body building. It was interesting and refreshing to see something new in my news feed. But more than that though Rahim’s personality comes across very well on Social Media and that is something that isn’t always easy to achieve, even if you are being yourself and being genuine. When I saw Rahim post a selfie outside a David Lloyd Gym telling us he had just finished a meeting with them I was intrigued – Rahim seemed like a go-getter who hunted down business and ‘Hustled’. I had to know more and so I invited him on the show. I expected Rahim to be a great guest…but he exceeded my expectations!”

Be sure to stick around to the end to find out how you can appear on the show and get involved and also to hear some shout outs to those who have left iTunes reviews!

You really do need to have your notepad to hand, because the gems are dropped thick and fast in this episode!

Links to most of what is mentioned in this episode can be found below in the ‘Show Notes’ section

Here’s some more of Rahim’s work and be sure to check him out on Social Media where you can find more of his work.

Rahim’s advice this week was simply to go out and make it happen. Organise shoots and fulfill them. Work for free when needed to get a portfolio. Send photographs to magazines and newspapers. Do what it takes to get yourself known and just do the work. We make our own success and we create our own opportunities – so no excuses: go out and do it!

Podcast 18 – An Interview with Neil Buchan-Grant

It’s not every day that you get to spend a day with the British Press Travel Photographer of the Year, but that’s just what I did on a sunny Saturday in June.

I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down to talk about all sorts with the one and only Neil Buchan-Grant; British Press Travel Photographer of the Year, Olympus Ambassador and all-round nice guy.

1901546_10153329623489899_7856027988391111082_n

This conversation was long-in-the works. I actually first came across Neil’s work almost by accident and very much unknowingly: Whilst looking at all of the mirrorless cameras on the market to see what they were all about I found an advert from Olympus in a photography magazine; it was to promote an offer they had on one of their OM-D cameras and the photograph that accompanied this advert was of an extremely beautiful young lady, photographed in black and white. She is wearing a masquerade mask and is beautifully lit in a soft and pleasing way. It’s an amazing photograph and really caught my eye.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This was the work of Neil Buchan-Grant. But I didn’t know it at that stage.

As my research into mirrorless continued I then found a blog post, titled: “Shooting in New York with the Olympus OMD EM1” showing off some more of Neil’s work. I wasn’t just mesmorised because the photographs were amazing, I was truly taken aback by the fact they were made with an Olympus Micro Four Thirds camera. Now, after having picked one up myself I’m not surprised at all as to what they’re capable of, but non-the-less and camera aside Neil’s work continues to really impress me and has set a new benchmark in my eyes. “I have to interview this guy!” I thought.

Then I heard Neil was going to be at the UK Photography Show and arranged an Interview. That wasn’t to be however – Our paths didn’t cross owing to different schedules on the day. So eventually Neil and I arranged a day in the summer where I travelled to Winchester to Neil’s house to meet the man himself and chew the fat. This interview features so many insights into the way Neil has earned his photographic success so far, including entering competitions and just putting himself out there and getting things done. What I really took away from this conversation was that if you want to achieve something, anything, you have to go out and do it. We talk about this and so much more, which is why this episode is around 2 hours long – so you may end up listening in parts, but it’s all worth it from start to finish.

Links to most of what is mentioned in this episode can be found below in the ‘Show Notes’ section

Here’s some more of Neil’s work and be sure to check out his website which features even more amazing photographs.

Podcast 17 – An Interview with Steve Saporito

After moving my office into it’s new home (again) I’m back with Episode 17 – an Interview with the one and only Steve Saporito.

I don’t want to say too much about this episode here, because I honestly won’t do it justice. All I can say is that as someone who gives a lot of thought to photography and the business of photography, I thought I was pretty well placed to offer guidance and support to others – Steve showed me how big a gap in my own knowledge and thinking there actually is.

SteveSaporito

In this episode we cover the idea that common sense in not common. If you don’t want to sell a certain product, don’t display it! If you care more, you’ll be successful. Don’t write people off (like I do, all too often). We also touch on the subject of pricing too, which is a real eye opener!

Notepads to hand! Open your minds and let Steve Saporito on in to help you out!

Podcast 16 – An Interview with David DuChemin

Episode 16 of the Ready Steady Pro Podcast brings you the first Interview since Michael has returned from his break. This week on the podcast Michael chats with the one and only David DuChemin.

David-Angkor-Horiz

If you’ve not heard of David DuChemin then you need to firstly listen to this interview, but also check him out online. David owns the amazing Craft & Vision eBook company. C&V are, in my mind, the best photography book company out there. The C&V books are not only amazingly finished and full of so much quality, but they’re usually only $5 too! David himself is a very humble and intelligent gentleman and I really enjoyed this interview.

We talk about David packing his life into a Land Rover, falling off a wall in Italy, starting all over again, starting an eBook company as a happy accident, we talk about inspiration, creativity, vision, business, his appearance on Creative Live and so much more. I can’t believe we didn’t go on for 3 hours with this chat.

There are also lots of news and announcements at the end of today’s show too, including lots of ways you can too can get involved with Ready Steady Pro such as Photographer In Focus, Photography Q&A and how you can apply to appear as a guest on the show!

It’s good to be back! So get ready for another cracking episode. Notepads to hand!

Podcast 15 – Gear for Photographers: What’s in our camera bags?

We’re back! Let’s get back into the swing of things with this really apt song!

It’s been far to long I know! But The Ready Steady Pro Photography Podcast is back! Episode 15 see’s us returning with a show recorded back in mind January. I was once again joined by the old guard (old as in they’ve been on the show before, not actually old) to talk about what gear we have in our bags. My guests for this episode include Rob Grimes, Lel Hurst, Neil Graham and Lee Jones.

Each of my guests today views the gear in their bags in a slightly different way and put emphasis on different items too. We talk about lenses and bodies, of course, but also other items and accessories you should have along with you on a wedding day. The subject of third party lenses comes up too when Rob touches on why he uses Sigma. I also ask my guests to talk about what items they easily could have done without when they first started and also to talk about the items they absolutely could not do without if push came to shove.

Don’t Adjust Your Set

The Podcast is returning and new episodes are ready for release!

I’ve had numerous emails, messages on Facebook and posts to the Ready Steady Pro Community all asking the same thing: “Is my Podcast App broken?”

Don’t sweat it guys. Your Podcast app is not broken!

The last episode of the podcast, episode 14 was released on January 13th. I remember saying at the start of that episode that my newborn son was sleeping well at the time and that I didn’t want to jynx it.Well, I did just that! That first week he was sleeping wonderfully but almost immediately after that episode was released he started to wake during the night. Suffice to say we were tired! Add to that the fact we have an energetic two year old daughter too meant that my poor wife was left holding a sleepless baby and chasing after a bundle of energy.

bundle of energy

It was time for some time off! Lel Hurst perhaps put it the best way I’ve heard so far: “Michael’s been on Paternity leave”.

Well things are going smoothly again now and after plenty of time spent at home with the family It’s about time to begin podcasting again. So I’m very pleased to announce that as of Tuesday 8th April you’ll start to see one episode every week in your podcast feed!

For Episode 15 I’m really pleased to share a round table discussion that I had with Lel Hurst, Lee Jones, Rob Grimes and Neil Graham where we talked about what gear we had in our bags to shoot our niches. we discussed what gear we couldn’t live without and even what gear we could easily have not bothered buying when we started out.

So, if you’re new to the game (whether it’s weddings, portraits, sports or wildlife) I hope that this episode will have something in it for you.

Oh, and as I do with every episode I’ve got some news and some announcements that I’ll talk about a little bit both at the start and at the end of episode 15 including ways you too can get involved with Ready Steady Pro!

Stay Tuned to The podcast for photographers turning pro!

Podcast 14 – An Interview with Valerie Jardin

In Ready Steady Pro fashion: Episode 14 see’s us returning to an interview. Following on from the success of interviewing the likes of Frank Doorhoff and Andrew Hellmich, we’re back with another very well known photographer in our hotseat – Valerie Jardin of Valerie Jardin Photography.

Valerie Jardin Profile Pic-1

Valerie is a surprise package: being most known for frequent appearances on the massive ‘TWiP’ Podcast and of course being synonymous with street photography , Valerie was kind enough to share all sorts about herself including have been a studio owner, shooting weddings and not liking the experience, and making a living from shooting photographs only for herself.

This week Valerie and I also get into discission about the importance of family members and the role they can have on your success too!

So, be sure to get comfortable and enjoy a delightfully educational listen.

Podcast 13 – Reflecting on 2013 & Planning for 2014

For episode 13 I bring to you the audio taken from a Google+ Hangout I did back in December 2013 with a group of great photographers and members of the Ready Steady Pro Facebook community. The Hangout was dubbed as ‘The Ready Steady Pro Virtual Christmas Party’ but really it was more a of a year in review and a look forward to everyone’s plans for 2014.

In this episode each guest talks a little but about how 2013 treated them as a photographer: The high’s, the low’s and the lessons learned. Then, we find out from each guest how the plan to move their photography and businesses forward over the next 12 months. This Episode really is an intruiging listen, especially seeing that we’ve got 5 guests with very different views, backgrounds and niche’s! So, get your notepads at the ready once again and take a listen (or, a watch via YouTube) to Episode 13!

Back from the Christmas Holidays

Hey guys!

I hope you had an amazing Christmas and got all of the camera gear that you asked Santa for? 🙂

I know, I know, things have been a little on the quiet side as of late. Well, it has been Christmas! I’ve spent a few weeks at home with my wife and daughter, taking it easy and really enjoying some great family time. Over the past 12 months we’ve moved house twice and have had all sorts keeping us incredibly busy, so we agreed that over the Christmas period I’d step away from Social Media, put down the podcasting mic and spend some quality time with family. I must say it’s been great and a really relaxing couple of weeks. I’ve been itching the whole time to record interviews, chat with photographers for the podcast and get back on here, writing for the Ready Steady Pro blog.

As I mentioned at the end last episode of the Podcast (Episode 12) My wife and I are expecting our second baby any day now. In fact, our little boy was due on December 23rd – that’s now long gone and we’re overdue! So, at the moment we’re just taking each day as it comes. With our first child we were two weeks overdue, so we feel like we know what to expect. But, because my wife keeps having these false alarms I’ve effectively decided to put podcast recordings on hold: I don’t want to get half way through a great conversation and then have to dash!

That doesn’t mean I haven’t been planning though. January is sure to be a great month for the Podcast with an amazing selection of photographers coming on the show, including the one and only Valerie Jardin (frequent guest of the This Week In Photo Podcast, not to mention a great photographer and teacher), we’ve got the amazing Tokyo-based Mr Martin Bailey lined up to come on the show. Martin, who you may know for his nature & wildlife work is also a master printer and supremely technical and talented photographer. Martin has written a number of amazing books, including ‘Making the Print’ and ‘Sharp Shooter’, so he really knows his stuff. Both Martin’s books are available through a company we’re always talking about right here on the Podcast: Craft & Vision. And finally, talking of Craft & Vision, we have the visionary, the humanitarian and the founder of Craft & Vision – Mr David DuChemin coming on the show too! David has agreed to appear on the show to talk about all sorts, including business, his appearance on CreativeLive and how his experiences have made him the man he is today.

So, as you can imagine, with these guys lined up to come on the show just in the month of January the Ready Steady Pro Podcast is starting off with a bang in 2014 and it’s going to be great!

For now, I’m back to blogging and I’ve got episode 13 of the Podcast in the works at the moment. It’s actually the audio that i’ve managed to extract from a Google+ Hangout I did just before Christmas. I’m keen to get that released as an audio-only episode too as I know many people much prefer to listen to the audio whilst they go about their daily business. For now though you can check out what will effectively make up Episode 13 of the Podcast below (check out the Hangout Video). Joining me for Episode 13 was:

So, for now I’ll be holding off recording anything new until the little one is here, but I’m  back to blogging and I’ve got a lot to talk about. Although I’ve been spending time with the family and having a little R&R my brain has been buzzing and I’ve got lots to write and share. So keep an eye on the blog, be sure to hit subscribe and if you haven’t already – go and check out the podcast!

So, all I’ve got left to do is wish you all the best for the New Year. May all your hopes, dreams, business plans and desires come true. Thank you so much to everyone who subscribes to the Podcast in iTunes & Stitcher Radio. Ready Steady Pro will be back on the airwaves in January!

(oh for a bit of fun check out me putting up my Christmas Tree in super high speed Stop Motion 😉 )

Thanks…Bye bye!
